The Leinster Printmaking Studio was the brainchild of Margaret Becker, stained glass artist and printmaker who, with several other artists, formed a company called the Leinster Printmaking Studio Limited in 1998, with support for capital expenditure from the Arts Council and Kelt, (Kildare Enterprise Leader Teoranta.

The L.P.S. caters for anyone with an interest in printmaking, from the beginner to the professional artist. It presently offers facilities for producing prints by intaglio, (etching and drypoint), aquatint, (an intaglio process for creating a tonal field), carborundum, (an abrasive powder made of carbon and silicon), photo-etch and photo-lithography.

The studio comprises a large work room with photoetch light box, a clean area which incorporates a quiet space for reading, drawing or as a place for holding meetings. Alongside is a dark room for developing the photo etch and lithography plates. A second large space serves as an inking-up and printing area and a smaller room holds the etching and aquatint facilities. An adjacent room contains a large guillotine and there is also a small equipped kitchen.

The studio is bright and well heated. It has five presses, a Little John,(28 x 48), a Lilly and Hewitt, (19 x 48), a Tofko, (31 x 55) a Furnaival and Co.(15 x 36), all with gears, and a small press with a star wheel but without gears, (14 x 24), a guillotine for cutting metal and Axpet Polyethylene, a drying press, plenty of storage space for paper and materials, and good car-parking facilities.

Printmaking Techniques in Studio

The Leinster Printmaking Studio is a 'safe' or 'green' studio - which means that, whenever possible, members strive to use safe and non-toxic materials. Substances such as white spirits, turpentine, nitric acid, resin and bitumen are unwelcome. It was decided to use environmentally friendly materials in order to limit the damage to the environment and to the practitioners.

Over the years the L.P.S. has established links with other printmaking workshops including Seacourt in Co. Down, Limerick Printmakers, Lorg in Galway, The Graphic Studio in Dublin, and The Regional Print Studio in Wrexham, among many others.

The L.P.S. is a non-profit making company incorporated in the Republic of Ireland, limited by guarantee and not having a share capital. It received charity status recognition from the Revenue Commissioners and therefore can accept donations over €500 in any tax year from an individual or company who will then be entitled to deduct the amount of the donation from their taxable income. The studio is presently funded by Kildare County Council, Kelt, its members and associate members (i.e. non-key holders) and friends. The L.P.S. encourages printmakers from the surrounding areas of Kildare, Wicklow, West Dublin, Offaly, Meath and Laois to join the studio and to avail of the facilities.
